Wombat Experience
If you have ever dreamed of getting close to wombats in the wild, this wombat experience is one of the most memorable things you can add to your time on Flinders Island. Visit local wildlife carer Kate Mooney at her home in Emita and see first-hand how she raises orphaned wombat joeys.
Kate has lived on Flinders Island for decades and has devoted much of her life to caring for injured and orphaned wombats. When a mother is hit on the road or a young joey is found alone, locals often call Kate first.
At her property in Emita, she bottle feeds tiny joeys, builds safe enclosures and gently prepares each animal for life back in the bush. Spending time with her offers a rare glimpse into the dedication and heart that sit behind the island's relaxed way of life.
Meet Kate, the wombat carer
If Kate is available, you can arrange a visit to her home and meet some of the wombats currently in her care. Depending on the day, you might watch a feeding, learn how she keeps the joeys warm and healthy or, if the timing is right, enjoy a gentle cuddle with a young wombat.
Kate is always happy to answer questions and share stories about their personalities, habits and quirks, so you leave with a deeper understanding of these much-loved island locals.
What happens during your visit
Caring for orphaned wombats takes time, energy and plenty of supplies. Formula, bedding, enclosures and medical costs all add up, which is why visitors are encouraged to make a financial contribution when they visit.
A minimum donation of $50 helps Kate continue to rescue, raise and release joeys that would otherwise not survive. By taking part in this visit, you are not just enjoying a close encounter; you are actively supporting the future of the Flinders Island wombat population.
